إن عملية وضع عبارة أو جملة داخل عبارة أو جملة أخرى تُسمّى التضمين.
وبالعودية والتضمين نستطيع أن نأخذ عددًا محدودًا من الصيغ (الكلمات والعبارات) ونبني عددًا لا نهائيًا من التعبيرات.
كما يتيح لنا التضمين بناء بنية لا نهائية الطول، نظريًا على الأقل.
